Famous Bohemians

Jack Kerouac found new life on the shelves of public libraries. Paul Gauguin's painted perspectives on life hang among works from fellow artists Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali. The beats, gypsies, dandies and nouveau followers were all bohemians.

However, not all bohemians are dead. Many live among us. These bohemians often go unnoticed because most revel in those historically great works of art, literature and philosophy. One can be sure most people called Allen Ginsberg, Kurt Vonnegut, Charles Bukowski and Jackson Pollock crazy.

Like many bohemians, these visionaries were ahead of their time. Lives dictated by the social norm were not capable of understanding the extraordinary ideas created by the bohemians of their times.

For example, writer Albert Camus had an interesting perspective on the meaning of life. Contributing to Absurdist logic, Camus explored the paradoxical notion that life, though valued by humans who live it, becomes meaningless the moment death is accepted as an eventuality. More recently, Tim Leary's belief that LSD can beneficially alter the mind if taken in correct dosage certainly is not a theory commonly held by the norm.

Is everyone in a mental care facility gifted beyond a regular intellectual capacity? No, but maybe perceived mental instability is the price those choosing to shun societal normalcy pay. What a shame it is to pass judgment on creativity and divergent thinking only to celebrate its greatness after the creator has passed.

Though modern day bohemians- such as musicians Bjork and Thom Yorke- are often criticized for their abnormalities, they play much more acceptable role in society. Have bohemians evolved to a level others are more willing to accept? It is possible the public has grown more accepting and appreciative of those daring enough to live in their own way. Regardless, today's famous bohemians are creating important works and cultivating methodologies just as profound as famous bohemians of the past.

The bohemian class is unapologetically successful of capturing something many others fail to recognize within the span of their lifetime. The bohemian makes the best of his or her conditions, loves wholeheartedly, expresses freely, appreciates the world's beauty and still has enough grace to give back the wonder.

Humans tend to see things in retrospect with un-fogged sight and appreciate what has past with an insatiable appetite. Bohemians will sooner or later be known. Let us raise our glasses to those courageous enough to proclaim a bohemian reality for themselves. Anyone willing to challenge the norm, start something worth finishing and abide by their own laws deserves applause.
