Victor Hugo

Known to many as the Father of French Romanticism, Victor Hugo helped to create French Bohemia with his plays Cromwell and Hernani.

In the preface to Cromwell, Hugo called for freedom from the restrictions of the Classical style. Many young poets and writers saw this as a call to arms and supported Hugo immensely. With this support, Hugo and his wife were able to open their own salon where writers and painters could congregate and discuss artistic issues.

Hugo is best known for his many novels and essays. His most famous work Les Miserables depicted many different Parisian classes, including students which made up a large portion of bohemians. Hugo depicts the students as carefree, but seriously committed to their artistic freedom.
