William Makepeace Thackeray

Although William Makepeace Thackeray was educated in London, he lived among the Parisian bohemians and learned much of his craft from them.

Like most bohemians, Thackeray lived a life of poverty, making a living by selling his sketches and novels on the street. His sketches depicted the French aristocracy in a satirical manner, as well as different bohemians in their daily lives. He left Paris and returned to London in 1837. In 1847 and 1848, his novel Vanity Fair was published as a serial introducing bohemian ideals to British society.
