You know when you're a Bohemian When…
What people consider themselves to be bohemian? What eccentricities constitute a bohemian lifestyle?
Even before books were produced on presses, people have been categorizing differences in each other. If we tried to remember every detail of every person we encountered, our brains would be a dense mess on the verge of combustion with no space for learning. This is tied to the first inkling of bohemian tendencies. A bohemian does not clutter his or her mind with social norms. Instead, the zest for life is maintained and sprung from their pure exhibitionism and lack of regard for external appearances or categorization.
Maintaining a sense of self is essential to the bohemian, but not in a material regard. As many people could not live without the luxuries of a television or an automobile, a bohemian will make do. In fact, a lack of resources could possibly be the spark in the step a bohemian possesses different from most. “So what if I don't have a car?” the bohemian says to themselves, “All the better motivation to get out of the house and explore on foot, or by salvaged bicycle.”
Many people living more traditional lifestyles speed past little treasures every day. It is the path less traveled which opens doors and unravels options to the bohemian. For example, buying a puppy seems silly when there are plenty of lonely, lost dogs roving around, begging for a home.
As far as companionship goes, bohemians will tend to gravitate toward one another. Why would a bohemian desire to be bogged down by someone else's mortgage or divorce woes at a bar when they can be in the warm company of a few, surrounded in found items, smoke escaping between lips and laughter bouncing in the air?
Those not of the bohemian persuasion may lose track of a bohemian’s often divergent train of thought. The revelations on life, stemming from the twists of soy in their coffee cups, may draw contorted and confused facial expressions. Bohemians tend to spend long hours conversing about artistic linguistics and environmental issues.
Ultimately, the key to knowing when you have become a bohemian comes down to an acknowledgement inside yourself. You no longer need the approval of others. You do not march to the beat of any one drum, but dance to the rhythm of some old record player. Staying indoors all day is never an option because there are just too many nooks and crannies to explore. You find mornings are incomplete without a cup of coffee and a long gaze out the six-paned window. When a re-location is in order, new construction is never considered in favor over a lived-in vintage place with character, stories and possibly a haunting.
The dead give away, though, is the sense of energy and life bursting at the seams with such force, that convention was not just left at the door, it failed to exist in your bloodstream. So live it up, you are a bohemian through and through!
